Romance Scam Warning Signs and Safe Next Steps

Romance scams often develop slowly. Someone forms an intense connection, repeatedly avoids meeting or live verification, and later introduces an emergency, travel problem, investment opportunity, or package fee.

Common warning signs

  • The relationship becomes unusually serious very quickly.
  • There are repeated reasons they cannot meet or video chat live.
  • They request money, crypto, gift cards, account access, or help receiving funds.
  • Their photos, location, occupation, or personal story contain inconsistencies.

Examples of suspicious wording

‘My account is frozen while I’m overseas. Can you help just this once?’
‘Our future is in this investment, but you must use my trading platform.’

Wording alone cannot prove a scam. Consider the sender, destination, request, and pressure together.

How to verify it safely

  1. Pause financial decisions and discuss the situation privately with someone you trust.
  2. Try a reverse-image search and look for reused names or photographs.
  3. Ask for a live video conversation without advance scripting.
  4. Never send money or financial credentials to someone you have not independently verified.

If you already clicked, paid, or replied

  1. Stop sending money, even if promised funds appear recoverable after one more payment.
  2. Contact the bank, exchange, or payment platform immediately.
  3. Secure accounts and preserve conversations, receipts, wallet addresses, and profile links.
  4. Report the profile to the platform and the fraud to ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
