Fake Tech Support Pop-Up and Remote Access Scams

Fake security alerts try to make a normal browser problem feel like an emergency. A pop-up or caller may claim that your device, bank account, or identity is under attack and instruct you to call a number or install remote-control software.

Common warning signs

  • A browser pop-up claims to have detected viruses and says not to close the page.
  • You are told to call a displayed number or install remote-access software.
  • The person asks you to sign in to banking, move money, buy gift cards, or pay in cryptocurrency.
  • The alert uses loud sounds, full-screen warnings, countdowns, or threats of data loss.

Examples of suspicious wording

Microsoft has detected five viruses. Do not shut down. Call support now.
Install this support tool so I can secure your bank account remotely.

Wording alone cannot prove a scam. Consider the sender, destination, request, and pressure together.

How to verify it safely

  1. Do not call the number, click the warning, or grant remote access.
  2. Close the browser using the operating system controls and restart the device if needed.
  3. Run the security tools already built into the device or contact a trusted technician independently.
  4. Contact your bank from a different trusted device if financial accounts were shown during remote access.

If you already clicked, paid, or replied

  1. Disconnect the device from the internet and end the remote-access session.
  2. Uninstall remote-access tools with qualified help and run a security scan.
  3. Change important passwords from another trusted device and enable multi-factor authentication.
  4. Tell banks and card issuers immediately if accounts or payments were involved.
